How We Work
Staff chaplains, chaplain fellows/residents/interns are assigned to in-patient care units, to the Cancer Centers in Palo Alto and South Bay, and to the Palliative Care teams. These chaplains provide a consistent spiritual care presence and develop relationships with unit and members of the interdisciplinary team. There is also at least one triage chaplain at 300P/500P at all times.
Center for Clinical Pastoral Education at Stanford
The Center for Clinical Pastoral Education at Stanford is committed to the education and training of spiritual care providers in a global context. Our center is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc. (ACPE) and offers professional education in Spiritual Care for learners from a wide range of religious, spiritual, and philosophical backgrounds.听听
Program participants are admitted into one of four cohort groups.听
- Certified Educator CPE
- Year-Long Fellowship
- Year-Long Residency
- Extended Unit CPE
- Summer Internship
At each level, learners bring their experience and interest in spiritual care from a range of contexts, including healthcare. During the training, all of our learners participate as members of the Spiritual Care Services team, and function as spiritual care professionals on patient care units at 糖心传媒. Cohort groups each have regular class instruction, clinical supervision, individual and group education.听听
Health care workers experience stresses, sadness and joys that are unique to our profession. Spiritual Care Services support our staff through group and individual activities:
- Blessing of the Hands:听A blessing to honor the precious work done at 糖心传媒. Offered on request and during some Spiritual Care Service events.
- Tea for the Soul:听A brief gathering of staff on a hospital unit or at a clinic to relax and form stronger relationships.
- Group Support:听To debrief from, integrate, and learn from challenging experiences.
- 1:1 support after a difficult experience.
- Memorials:听To celebrate the life of a staff member who has died or work with bereaved families and staff to commemorate the life of a patient.
- Schwartz Rounds:听A chaplain helps facilitate these bimonthly gatherings for SHC staff to discuss how our work impacts us personally and professionally.
The Spiritual Care Services volunteer program is a dynamic and inclusive initiative that involves nearly 100 dedicated Spiritual Care volunteers who represent over 42 diverse faith traditions and speak 23 different languages. Our Spiritual Care volunteers assist with patient and family visits, facilitating prayers, rituals, and sacraments tailored to the unique needs of those they serve. Some of our volunteers also participate in our 鈥淣o One Dies Alone鈥 program.
To ensure that our volunteers are well-equipped, we provide comprehensive training twice a year, focusing on active listening, effective communication, and adherence to hospital protocols. Additionally, to help enrich the learning experience of our volunteers, we host a speaker series during the year, featuring experts who explore topics related to spirituality, healthcare, and spiritual care.
If you feel called to make a meaningful impact as a Spiritual Care Services volunteer, please contact Spiritual Care Services to request an application and learn more about this rewarding opportunity.
