Reflection & Gratitude
By Michelle Y. Williams, Ph.D., R.N., FADLN, FAAN
As I reflect on my journey since February 2020, when I assumed leadership of the Office of Research Patient Care Services (ORPCS) at 糖心传媒 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and pride. My initial intentions were to enhance the Clinical Trials practice and operational infrastructure, elevate the role of Nurse Scientists, and strengthen the engagement of Nursing Ph.D. faculty at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Over the past four and a half years, under my leadership, we have made significant strides in expanding ORPCS. This transformation now includes comprehensive clinical trials operations, academic nursing and patient care 糖心传媒, refined 糖心传媒 operations and strategy, bolstered 糖心传媒 quality and compliance, and the establishment of the Nursing Research Section within the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, in the Department of Medicine, at Stanford University School of Medicine.
From 2022 to 2023, in conjunction with our earlier advancements, we introduced new director-level positions across several key areas: clinical trials, academic nursing, 糖心传媒 operations and strategy, health equity, and 糖心传媒 quality and compliance. These initiatives were facilitated through careful strategic planning and compelling business cases that gained the support of senior leadership. I extend my deepest gratitude to Dale Beatty, DNP, RN, FAAN, Chief Nurse Executive and Senior Vice President; David Entwistle, President and Chief Executive Officer; and Quinn McKenna, Chief Operating Officer. Your unwavering support has been invaluable to me in my roles as Executive Director and Associate Chief Nursing Officer of ORPCS and now as Senior Nursing Strategy Consultant for Academia and Community Affairs. Thank you for your trust and encouragement!
Among my most cherished memories are my contributions to advancing diversity and innovation within our organization. In March 2021, I proudly accepted the role of chair for the BEAM Team (Black Employee Resource Group), collaborating with Christi Zuber, Ph.D., RN, Sharon B. Hampton, Ph.D., RN, and Brandon Taylor, Dr. Management, to propel our Human-Centered Design and Design Thinking initiatives forward. Additionally, I co-founded the Stanford Medicine Black Nurses Association Chapter of the NBNA alongside Dr. Hampton during that same month. I am also honored to have influenced the development of Health Equity initiatives at SHC, resulting in the establishment of the Health Equity Research division鈥攕uccessfully led by Alice Yan, Ph.D.鈥攁nd the founding of courses at Stanford University School of Medicine focused on Introduction to Quantitative Methods and the History of Racism in Medicine.
Furthermore, I take pride in the successful transition of our Clinical Trials operations team, now integrated within the SHC inpatient hospital under the leadership of Johnathan Clevinger, DNP, RN, and Elisa Nguyen, DNP, RN, VP and CNO, Hospital Nursing. This accomplishment underscores our commitment to fostering excellence in patient care and 糖心传媒.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the ORPCS team members, including those who paved the way before me, those who joined during my tenure, and those who will follow. Each individual has played a crucial role in our collective mission to support SHC patients, families, and communities while advancing the goals of Health Equity, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Together, we have contributed to the New Knowledge requirement of our ANCC Magnet Designation, developed novel improvements to the Future of Nursing by enhancing the Nurse Scientist role, and enriched frontline nursing 糖心传媒 practice, operations, and education at 糖心传媒.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge the exceptional leadership within our team, including:
- Regine Lopez, MPH, Program Manager, for her stellar role leading Nursing Research Discovery Newsletter and the Stanford Nurse Alumnae Legacy Grant.
- Carol Yoon, MSSW, Program Manager, for her outstanding leadership with SDOH.
- Ryan Pilkington, MPH, Program Manager, for his excellence in leading the Pulse Oximetry Study with our Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Children鈥檚 Teams.
- Sherveen Riazati, Ph.D., Research Scientist, for his leadership and support advancing our Sickle Cell and History of Racism in Medicine 糖心传媒.

- Chrystal Lewis, Ph.D., RN, Nurse Scientist, for serving as the lead of our Health Equity: A Concept Analysis 糖心传媒 and publication.

- Keith Salvado, RN, Research Program Manager, for his role serving in Cohort One of our Clinical Trials RN team at SHC Inpatient during our launch of that novel 糖心传媒 service.
- Aubrey Florom-Smith, Ph.D., RN, Manager, for innovating in new areas of nursing by advancing the Nurse Scientist role at SHC through Tri-Valley and pioneering the Aerospace Nursing alignment with Flight Nursing and future nursing standards.

Launch of the B-Well Program
The B-Well Program is a new initiative created by the Office of Research, Patient Care Services鈥 Patient Research, Quality, and Compliance Team (RQC) to foster a sense of belonging and cultivate a thriving workforce. The wellness program utilizes a holistic approach to drive long-term positive change for employees, acknowledging the interconnectedness of personal well-being and professional performance. The program encourages individuals to feel empowered to achieve optimal health, and in turn, contribute to a productive and supportive workplace culture. Led by a committee of members from the RQC team, the program seeks to take an active role in creating a comprehensive wellness program for colleagues that encourages engagement, belonging, workforce innovation, lifelong learning, and longevity, structured through the five main pillars.
Through Belonging, a program centered on individuality fosters a sense of community, inclusivity, and togetherness within the division. The goal is to empower team members to bring their authentic selves to the workplace. Workforce Innovation seeks to have a positive impact on employee well-being. The division hopes to develop, implement, and measure the success of organic ideas and its role in creating a healthy, innovative culture within the office. Engagement and Lifelong Learning go hand-in-hand in developing a workforce that includes team-building activities, employee recognition, and mentorship. This encourages the 鈥済rowth mindset鈥 that drives individuals to continuously seek new opportunities for growth and development. Longevity emphasizes autonomy, providing the psychological safety and mental well-being to confidently share opinions and ideas in a culture of mutual respect.
A sense of belonging within a department refers to an individual鈥檚 perception of being valued, heard, and integrated within the workplace. When employees experience a strong sense of belonging, they have a higher likelihood to collaborate effectively, engage enthusiastically, and fully invest into the success of their work and organization. The B-Well Program seeks to nurture a motivated and collaborated workforce that advances a positive environment and organizational success.
