When to refer your patients for a heart failure evaluation
At ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½, we encourage early heart failure evaluation referrals. "Do not be concerned about referring patients to us too early," says Dr. Teuteberg. "We would rather see ten patients too early than one patient too late."
Our team recommends you refer your patients for a heart failure evaluation as soon as they experience:
- Ejection fraction less than or equal to 35%
- Class III* or IV** heart failure
- One or more hospitalizations for heart failure in the past six months
*Symptoms of class III heart failure include short of breath after walking block or up a flight of stairs.
**Symptoms of class IV heart failure include short of breath at rest or with minimal activity, such as taking a shower or changing clothes.
