Fibroid Center

Fibroids are common, benign tumors present in 70% of women, often presenting with symptoms such as difficult urination, excessive bleeding and pain. There are several types of treatment options for fibroids, from non-invasive MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS), minimally invasive options such as Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) and surgical options. At the Fibroid Center, our multispecialty team of gynecologists, surgeons and interventional radiologists complete a thorough patient evaluation to arrive at the most minimally invasive treatment option that is best suited for the patient.

MR Guided Focused Ultrasound Treatment of Uterine Fibroids

Your care team includes gynecologists, radiologists and interventional radiologists. In a single clinic visit, these specialists will obtain a medical history, perform a gynecologic exam, and review MR imaging of the pelvis. With this approach, our team will be able to discuss all treatment options, and help our patient arrive at the treatment choice that is best for her.

Care and Treatment of Fibroids

Treatments for Fibroids

We will discuss your treatment plan in detail with you. Our team offers a range of treatment options. We will determine the most effective plan for you based on your condition, expectations and preferences. We offer fertility-sparing treatment options if you wish to start or add to your family.

Treatment options include:

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

During this procedure, we cut off the blood supply to the uterine fibroids. This causes them to shrink. Learn more about uterine fibroid embolization.

MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS)

This is a specialized, noninvasive method to treat fibroids. We use an MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) to target and destroy fibroids. Learn more about MRgFUS.

Myomectomy

During a myomectomy, we surgically remove the uterine fibroids. We do not remove the uterus and reproductive organs so you can preserve your fertility. Read more about myomectomy.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is a targeted treatment method. We treat the disease at the source, using minimally invasive and image-guided techniques such as CT and fluoroscopy (specialized X-rays) and ultrasound. Learn more about interventional radiology.

Hysterectomy

During a hysterectomy procedure, we remove all or part of the uterus. This may include removing the: cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other surrounding structures. Learn more about hysterectomy.

SCHEDULING YOUR PATIENT

An initial consultation typically takes 60–90 minutes. If your office is scheduling multiple appointments for the same day, please allow enough time between appointments, so that we can provide the best care possible.

For return patient only:

  • During office hours (Mon-Fri 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) you may call and speak to the gynecology nurse at 650-498-5280.
  • For emergencies after hours please call the Gynecology Resident on call at 650-723-6661 or Stanford Express Care at 650-736-5211 or go to the Emergency Room.
