Traumatic injury can result in serious disability and is a leading cause of death in the United States. Injuries are preventable, including those from auto and motorcycle crashes, bicycle crashes, gun violence, or a fall at home. Behavior and environmental changes, as well as proper and consistent use of safety equipment, can help decrease the incidence of events resulting in injury and death.
Prevention laws and programs have been proven to save lives in many ways:
- Seat belts saved almost 15,000 lives in 2017
- Motorcycle helmets are estimated to have saved 1,544 lives in 2010 alone
- Since the Graduated Drivers License (GDL) inception, teen fatalities and serious injury have been reduced by 40%
- Bicycle helmets are estimated to reduce head injury by 85%
