Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Symptoms
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Symptoms
Our doctors at the Stanford Neuromuscular Program have many years of experience diagnosing CMT and often can quickly rule out other nerve diseases that can produce the same symptoms.
What are the Symptoms of Charcot-Marie-Tooth?
Symptoms of CMT may arise at any age, though more typically in adolescence or early adulthood. The symptoms may be difficult to distinguish from those of other forms of nerve diseases (peripheral neuropathies). Therefore, diagnosis can be difficult and often delayed.
In general, Charcot-Marie-Tooth signs and symptoms may include:
- Weakness of lower leg and foot muscles, resulting in foot drop
- Extremely high foot arches, hammertoes and other foot deformities
- Thinning of muscles in the lower legs and the hands
- Weakness in the hands and fingers
- Numbness or pain in the hands and feet
