Treatments for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia
Medications for Treatment of POTS
Some individuals need medications to help with symptoms, such as rapid pulse and low blood pressure. The autonomic disorders team recommends medications, if using compression stockings/garments and increasing fluid and salt in your diet is not sufficient.
The Autonomic Disorders Program team uses a variety of medications to individualize the treatment plan to meet your needs. These medications include those that help reduce your heart rate, such as beta blockers and calcium channel blockers. Other medications support your blood pressure like midodrine and fludrocortisone. Medications that affect neurotransmitters, such as those in the SSRI, SNRI classes of drugs, may also be recommended.
Anxiety can affect the autonomic nervous system. Anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms. In order for the nervous system to work as well as possible, it is also important to maintain good nutrition. If your vitamin levels are low, taking supplements can be helpful.
