Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: About this Condition

Diagnostic Tests for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
Your doctor will review your medical history and do a complete physical examination. In addition, there are multiple diagnostic tests to see if you have non-Hodgkin lymphoma and, if so, what type it is and whether it has spread.
Tests include:
- Lymph node biopsy. Removes an abnormal lymph node so it can be viewed under a microscope and undergo tests. The biopsy can be done 3 ways:
- Using a fine needle to withdraw the cells from the node
- Obtaining a core sample of cells using a wider needle
- Surgical biopsy, removing all or part of the lymph node to check for cancer cells
- Bone marrow biopsy, a clinic procedure done to remove cells from the bone marrow to check for cancer cells
- Imaging tests including CT, CT/PET, or MRI scans that can show how the extent and volume of the lymphoma
