A diagnosis of facial volume loss is usually made by visual examination. Your doctor will check for flattening of your cheeks and sagging of your skin.

Some people with facial volume loss have a sunken, hollowed-out appearance, especially near the temples and below the cheekbones. Other people have a 鈥渟aggy鈥 appearance, the result of skin losing its elasticity and giving in to the effects of gravity. There are also some people with facial volume loss defined by wrinkles around the lips and eyes.

A diagnosis of double chin is made by visual examination. Your doctor may ask you questions about when you noticed the condition start developing and whether other members of your family also have it. Your doctor also may ask about your diet and exercise.
