About this Treatment: Surgery for Pituitary Tumors
Ìý
About Pituitary Tumor Surgery
Surgery is usually recommended for pituitary tumors that press on the brain or optic nerve or cause abnormal hormone levels. Surgical goals include confirming the diagnosis, relieving symptoms that affect your quality of life, and normalizing hormone levels.
Some pituitary tumors are small and easy to separate from surrounding healthy brain tissue. In these situations, complete surgical removal is often possible. Other tumors are difficult to separate from surrounding tissue or located near sensitive areas in the brain. In these cases, surgery is more challenging and doctors only remove as much of the tumor as is safe.
Removing even some of the pituitary tumor can reduce symptoms and allow you to move forward with other types of treatment.
